What a NOC code is, and why RCIP cares

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is Canada’s official list of occupations. Every job falls into one of 516 five-digit “unit groups”, such as 63200 for cooks or 44101 for home support workers. IRCC, Job Bank and every RCIP community use these codes, so your job offer, your work experience and your community’s priority list are all matched by NOC.

The second digit of the code is the job’s TEER category (Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities). For RCIP it decides three things: the minimum language score you need, how many points each language level is worth in the points communities, and which work experience counts towards the 1,560-hour requirement.

The six TEER categories

How your TEER changes your RCIP application

• Language minimum: CLB/NCLC 6 for TEER 0 and 1, 5 for TEER 2 and 3, and 4 for TEER 4 and 5, in all four abilities.
• Language points: in the points communities, the full 25 points takes CLB 9 for TEER 0/1 jobs, CLB 8 for TEER 2/3 and CLB 7 for TEER 4/5.
• Work experience: a TEER 0 or 1 offer accepts experience in TEER 0 to 3; TEER 2 accepts 1 to 4; TEER 3 and 4 accept 2 to 4; a TEER 5 offer needs experience in the same 5-digit NOC. Registered nurse experience (31301) also counts for nurse aide (33102) and home support worker (44101) offers.
• Community lists: each community picks up to 25 priority occupations by NOC code. Being on the list usually adds occupation points; being off it can mean you can’t apply there at all.

Getting the code right matters. A cook is easy to guess as TEER 4, but 63200 is TEER 3, so a cook with CLB 7 scores 20 language points, not 25.

For points communities the number is the occupation points (sector points are added on top); “listed” means a first-come community (Steinbach, Altona/Rhineland, Moose Jaw) accepts the occupation without scoring it.
